Getting Started

It was about six years ago when I settled on the final details to begin the entrepreneurial journey of Lolili Wearable Art. I had the name, concept and designs in mind. The only thing left was to find the right fabric. It took some time, patience and perseverance.

After over two years of searching and sampling, I finally discovered the stunning Italian fabric and outstanding printing quality that I could simply not find anywhere else. This beautiful Italian modal/cashmere blend has become the standard for all Lolili fine-art scarves. Photographers are fussy about their images, and I am no different. This particular Italian supplier successfully met the brief on all accounts.

The samples I received were exquisitely buttery soft and luxurious, the colours so rich, and the details true. That was the final piece of the puzzle. It was a nerve-wracking decision to make such a huge investment. But, in a gigantic leap of faith, I held my breath and took the plunge.

Finding the perfect location

When I unpacked that first shipment, I knew it was right. It gave me goosebumps to open and wrap each delicious one around my shoulders. It was time to go public. I needed to get them seen and experienced. Through numerous cold calls and knocking on doors, I landed upon a couple of boutiques that would carry my then small collection of fine-art scarves. They, too, took a chance on me and my product. From then on, I have not looked back. To them, I will be ever grateful.

One of those first businesses, Barrington’s of Oakville, still consistently features my designs in their seasonal lookbooks and in their gorgeous outerwear boutique. That well-established and loved Oakville family business exudes beauty, elegance, and quality.

A few years ago, Helene Clarkson, a Toronto travel fashion designer began carrying a large selection of Lolili scarves. They perfectly accessorize her fabulous and uber-versatile travel wear shown in her Mount Pleasant Road boutique. As fellow world explorers, Helene and I have found a kindred spirit in travel and design. Yes, you can travel with only a carryon bag and a scarf.

Other shops and art galleries have had successful limited runs of Lolili scarves and have hosted exciting pop-up events. And now, most recently, RevolutionHer, a thriving female owned business that supports women entrepreneurs, has welcomed Lolili into their two stores in Burlington and Vaughan, and in their online shop.

Crossing Hurdles

Who knew that six months after starting this small but mighty company, the world would be struck by a disabling pandemic that would keep us secluded for over two years. My friends will tell you I don’t give up easily. I had to find a way to dance in the moment. It had to be social media and online marketing. I also chose to appeal to professionals running or attending zoom meetings who needed a quick, presentable, and elegant addition to their casual at-home attire for online meetings. And I promoted the versatility of using wearable art to add creative accents to home décor. This pause also allowed me to think, learn, and navigate the intimidating business side of things which required focus and study. As we all emerged into the world, so did Lolili.

What Really Matters

Even in the topsy-turvy economic times of the past few years, and especially now, I have found that people still need and crave beauty and comfort. Something to take off the chill of the unpredictable winds of change. The feedback I continue to get from my first time and repeat customers is just that. Lolili scarves bring comfort, colour, and creativity into their lives and wardrobes. This makes me tremendously happy.

Gratitude & Love

And last but not least, how could any entrepreneur move forward without the unwavering support of their family and friends. Without them, Lolili would not be. And I would not be who I am today. They are my rock, my cheering section, and the shoulder I need in confusing times. They promote my product as though it were their own. I am filled with gratitude.

What’s Next

As I venture more confidently into this seventh year of business, I am breaking out new designs that run the gamut from strong and graphic, colourful and sassy, to softly feminine. I am finding success with my scarf accessories as well. Thank you to those who have been there from the beginning and an open and warm welcome to those who are yet to join the Lolili club.
